Calcium Overdose Becoming More Common Leading to High BP and Kidney Failure

Tags: Hypercalcaemia, Overdose Ca, Kidney Failure, High BP, Vitamin D Deficient, All Cells Need,

I suspect that many people take calcium supplements in excess without adequate vitamin D to help guide the calcium to the bones and may thereby result in high blood calcium levels because it has no where to go. Because all the cells of our body needs vitamin D for health, I have concluded that our cells get most of the vitamin D. Those of you who are still reluctant to take at least 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 total including those in the calcium pills, should have your head and emotions examined. Start thinking logically. The data indicating this is now just enormous. http://vitaminDcouncil.org

Jim Kawakami, June 03, 2010, http://jimboguy.blogspot.com

British Medical Journal Guardian UK June 3, 2010 ... The (excess calcium) syndrome is now the third most common cause of high blood calcium levels, say researchers, accounting for between 8 percent and 38 percent of all hospital admissions due to hypercalcaemia in the US. (High blood calcium levels are also frequently caused by thyroid problems and cancer.) And, today, older women rank among those most often affected by the syndrome, rather than men with ulcers as in the past.

Since the syndrome is now typically tied to calcium supplements rather than milk consumption, researchers say its name should be changed to 'calcium-alkali syndrome'.

Where does the study come from?

The report was written by US researchers with the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. It was published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

What does this mean for me?

If you take calcium supplements, it's important that you don't exceed the recommended daily dose, unless told to do so by your doctor. Usually this is around 800 milligrams, although the researchers say 1.2 to 1.5 grams a day is probably safe. If you're at all unsure about how much calcium to take, check with your pharmacist or GP.

And if you're concerned your blood calcium level may be high, see your doctor straight away. Symptoms of hypercalcaemia include:

  • Feeling sick and being sick
  • Abdominal pain
  • Excessive thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Constipation
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle weakness
  • Confusion.
Patel AM, Goldfarb S. Got calcium? Welcome to the calcium-alkali syndrome. Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. Published online 22 April 2010.

Calcium is important for strong bones, but taking too much with high-dose supplements can lead to serious health problems, such as high blood pressure and even kidney failure. Calcium overdose has become more common in recent years, according to a new report. However, the researchers stress that calcium supplements should be safe when taken at recommended doses.

What do we know already?

Calcium and vitamin D are the most important nutrients for building your bones and keeping them strong. If you don't get enough, you have an increased risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition where your bones are so weak that they break easily.

Milk and other dairy products, green leafy vegetables, and fish with edible bones are excellent sources of calcium, and our bodies produce vitamin D in response to sunlight. But many older people – particularly women past the menopause –don't get enough of these nutrients and need to take supplements. This is partly because their bodies don't absorb calcium as efficiently as they used to.

Studies show that taking supplements with calcium and vitamin D may help prevent osteoporosis and lower the risk of broken bones. So, not surprisingly, many people routinely take these supplements. However, some take much more than the recommended dose, not realising that ingesting too much calcium can lead to a potentially serious condition known as milk-alkali syndrome.

You get this syndrome if you consume substantially more calcium than your body needs, leading to high levels of calcium in your blood (called hypercalcaemia). This can cause serious problems, such as high blood pressure, kidney damage, and even kidney failure.

What does the new article tell us?

In the new report, researchers looked at the history of milk-alkali syndrome and also its recent resurgence.

The syndrome first appeared in the early 1900s after a US doctor named Bertram Welton Sippy introduced a special diet (known as the Sippy diet) for people with peptic ulcers. The diet involved consuming large amounts of milk, cream, eggs, and cereal, as well as antacid powders every half hour. This bland diet helped soothe ulcer flare-ups. But its exceptionally high milk content meant that many people ingested too much calcium – hence the name milk-alkali syndrome.

With the development of effective drugs for ulcers, use of the Sippy diet declined and so did rates of milk-alkali syndrome. But the syndrome became more common again in the 1990s, due in large part to widespread use of over-the-counter calcium and vitamin D supplements. ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/besttreatments/2010/jun/03/calcium-supplements-helpful-in-moderation-harmful-in-excess

We Consume 56 gallons of Soda and 152 lbs of Sugar Annually Leading to Obesity, High BP, Cirrhosis, and Impotency

We Consume 56 gallons of Soda and 152 lbs of Sugar Annually Leading to Obesity, High BP, Cirrhosis, and Impotency

I thought until recently that obesity was entirely related to calories consumed. The recent Princeton study showed that at least in mice, High Fructose Corn Syrup HFCS (Corn Sugar) forces mice to eat more food than when an equal calories of cane sugar was in the diet. The exact reason is not know yet, but research by Dr. Johnson, a kidney doctor or nephrologist, now at Colorado University, may have found a way to stop the diabetes 2 epidemic which has led to an inordinate amount of kidney failures in Americans.

He looked at the metabolism of fructose to see why it seems to cause more harm. He found that about 30% of the metabolic products in the liver metabolism results in harmful low density lipoproteins, the bad cholesterol. In addition, he found that when fructose is metabolized in all our cells due to high fructose consumption producing more fructose enzymes in our cells, fructose depleted the ATP energy production process in cells and led to cell death.

Metabolism of DNA and other cell products leads to high Uric Acid levels which has been rising in Americans over the past 40 years Reagan decades where Republican control whether a Democrat or Republican President was in place where corporate profits trumped all other human needs. So Reagan wanted to improve the profitability of the corporations who produce our synthetic foods for human consumption which began in the Nixon administration with Secretary Butts.

First corn costs of production had to come down sharply. In the mid-1980s Reagan passed laws to increase the corn subsidies greatly which allowed it to be used as the base along with soybeans for essentially all our processed foods. Then they had to be stripped of fibers and nutrients so they can be frozen quickly and warmed quickly. Finally the tasteless or bad tasting food had to be sweetened with lots of sugar, but high levels of cane sugar had the bad habit of crystallizing out on standing so it could not be used.

Imported cane sugar from the Caribbean was cheap then, but Reagan also put a tariff on this corn so High Fructose Corn Syrup which does not crystallize, could be used in high amounts in manufactured foods using a Japanese enzymatic process to convert corn sugar to HFCS. This led to the Reagan Food Revolution and contributed greatly to produce corn fed cattle, hogs, and chicken in Factory Farms causing resistant bacteria in our foods due to heavy use of antibiotics, and hormones to increase the growth rate of these animals. and thereby contaminating our drinking water supply and poisoning our water supply used to wash vegetables.

Yes, the last e-coli kidney failures resulted from contaminated water used in washing organic lettuce. But it was not the common deadly 0157-H7, but other deadly e-coli bacteria contaminating the lettuce which are more difficult to develop a good test.

The Factory Farms refused to give a good non-corn diet two weeks before slaughter which results in basically e-coli free cattle.

See Animal Factory: The Looming Threat of Industrial Pig, Dairy, and Poultry Farms to Humans and the Environment" by David Kirby where he goes into detail why animals grown in feces and slaughtered without adequate cleaning.

Americans Consume 56 gallons of Soda and 152 lbs of Sugar Annually Leading to Obesity, High Blood Pressure, and Impotency Dr. Richard J. Johnson Video (10 min) and Dr Mercola's Comment.

... Dr. Haden Emerson, one of the first epidemiologists and a public health commissioner of New York, wrote a brilliant paper about the rise in diabetes in New York City. In it, he commented that people who got diabetes were wealthy, sedentary, white, and he posed that sugar was driving it, according to the information presented by Dr. Johnson.
Today, the average American is consuming 56 gallons of soda and 152 pounds of sugar-based sweeteners annually. Soda consumption has risen by 70 percent since 1977. Ten to 20 percent of children’s calories come from sugar -- and the top 20 percent of sugar-addicted children are getting 40 percent of their calories from sugar every single day.
It is no accident that childhood obesity is at a record high and life expectancy for the youngest generation is, for the first time, lower than that of their parents.
The worst type of sugar you can ingest is fructose, which may surprise you because it is derived from fruit.

Fructose Turns You Into a Uric Acid Factory

It’s been known for ages that meats and purine-rich foods can raise uric acid, but it turns out that one of the most profound ways to raise uric acid is by consuming the simple sugar fructose.
The chemical name for regular table sugar is sucrose, which is made up of two simple sugars, fructose and glucose, that are linked together.
Glucose and fructose are different types of simple sugars. After they are separated apart and broken down in your body they are metabolized using completely separate pathways. Glucose is utilized by every cell in your body -- in fact, your body was designed to use it for energy.
But fructose breaks down into a variety of waste products that are bad for your body, one of which is uric acid. As it turns out, uric acid drives up your blood pressure.
How does it do this?
Uric acid inhibits the nitric oxide in your blood vessels, and nitric oxide helps your vessels maintain their elasticity. Nitric oxide suppression leads to increases in blood pressure.
In fact, 17 out of 17 studies demonstrate that elevated uric acid levels lead to hypertension.
Thanks to Dr. Johnson’s research, we now know that fructose generates uric acid within minutes of ingestion. High levels of uric acid are normally associated with gout, but it has been long known that people with high blood pressure and kidney disease, and people who are overweight, often have elevated uric acid levels.
It was thought this increased uric acid resulted from the disease, but it appears now that it may have been CAUSING it!
Not surprisingly, uric acid levels have been increasing for the past hundred years.
When your uric acid level exceeds about 5.5 mg per dl, you have an increased risk for a host of diseases, including:
This is exactly why I am so passionate about educating you about the dangers of fructose! I am thoroughly convinced it’s one of the leading causes of a great deal of needless suffering from poor health and premature death.
One of the other professionals who truly opened my eyes and educated me on this issue is Dr. Robert Lustig, Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at University of California in San Francisco.
If you still haven’t watched his very popular and excellent lecture on the dangers of fructose and other sugars, I strongly recommend you take the time to do it. (I’ve published it in two parts. Click here for part 1, and here for part 2.)

Glucose Makes Fructose Even More Potent!

Fructose consumption clearly causes insulin resistance, whereas straight glucose does not. Insulin resistance can eventually lead to full blown diabetes.
Interestingly, glucose actually accelerates fructose absorption. So when you mix glucose and fructose together, you absorb more fructose than if you consumed fructose alone. This is an important piece of information if you are struggling to control your weight.
Remember, sucrose, or table sugar, is exactly this blend -- fructose plus glucose.

Is Fruit Bad?

If you are craving something sweet, your best bet is to reach for an apple or a pear. And if you give yourself a sugar holiday for even a couple of weeks, you will be amazed at how much those cravings will decrease. But be sure and count the grams of fructose and keep your total fructose from fruit below 15 grams per day as you are sure to consume plenty of "hidden" fructose in the other foods you will be eating.

Vit. D: Pregnancy, Breast, Libido, Autism, Schizophrenia, Depression, Heart, Stroke, Diabetes, High BP, Acne

Tags: Vit. D: Pregnancy, Breast, Libido, Autism, Schizophrenia, Depression, Heart, Stroke, Diabetes, High BP, Acne

Oil is in the news now, but very little about the real health benefits of Americans using less sunscreen and greatly increasing the vitamin D3 daily to at least 2,000 IU and up to 5,000 IU.

As I mentioned in the past, vitamin D really boosted my testosterone level from normal for someone my age to levels seen in teenagers. Yes, it has really increased my Libido as some rumors in the news has mentioned.

The establishment is always conservative to preserve their place in the hierarchy.

I was cursed or blessed with a level of independence not accepted in our current society so I am generally skeptical of those who have the gift (inherited) of gab and are part of the Establishment.

We have seen in our political debates that confirmed facts have no place in what they say. Republicans and the media are now blaming Obama for screwing up on the oil spill now. First let me remind you that several years ago the NY Times has an obscured article that mentioned that Obama was really worried about Bush putting in ideological troops into our civil service system whose employees are hard to remove. That is why the Republicans refused to approve a competent and honest leader for the Oils and Mineral unit which has strong control of off-shore drilling requirements. Apparently these Bush Boys violated all protocol and ignored the role of other agencies regulating off-shore oil rigs. The Swiss company flew the flag of the Marshal Islands as reported by Rachel Maddow http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/ns/msnbc_tv-rachel_maddow_show/#37141886

The blind adherence by doctors, scientists, and others to the role of sunscreen UVB use causing all sorts of illnesses including osteoporosis without realizing that vitamin D is critical not only for bones but for our overall health including our immune system.

Here are some of the letters to Dr. John Cannell of www.vitaminDcouncil.com from all over the world seeking council on vitamin D by medical doctors and others whose children have serious health problems including acne for teenagers.

Suzy, give Mike this because his website does not accommodate more than one page long e-mails. Thanks!

Dear Dr. Cannell:
I have a four-month-old infant and I am worried because I only took a prenatal vitamin during my pregnancy but no extra vitamin D. I am breastfeeding but I give him formula as well as breast milk. Do I need to give him extra vitamin D?
Jeanne, England
Dear Jeanne:
Yes, you do. In fact, CDC researchers just announced that less than 25% of U.S. infants are getting the outdated recommended amount of vitamin D (400 IU/day). I suspect the situation is worse in England. Dr. Cria Perrine and her colleagues at the CDC analyzed questionnaires sent to over 15,000 mothers with infants ranging in age from 1-10 months.
The breast milk of vitamin D deficient mothers contains little vitamin D and virtually all mothers are deficient, thus breast milk usually has little vitamin D. Dr. Perrine found that only about 10% of breast-feeding infants are supplemented to meet the 400 IU/day recommendation; more surprising, only about 30% of formula-fed infants were getting 300 IU/day, mainly because few infants consume the one liter of formula needed to do so.
One bad sign, Dr. Perrine reiterated the 1999 American Academy of Pediatrics sunshine warning, which amounts to child abuse, stating, “children under the age of 6 months should be kept out of the sun altogether and that those aged 6 months or older should wear protective clothing and sunscreen to minimize sun exposure.” One good sign, WebMD mentioned that adequate amounts of vitamin D might prevent respiratory infections in infants.
The vitamin D Council recommends that breastfeeding infants under one year of age take 1,000 IU/day unless the mother takes 5,000 IU/day, in which case the infants will get all they need from breast milk. Formula fed infants need an extra 600 IU/day. Carlson Ddrops, either 400, 1,000 or 2,000 IU/drop are available at most health food stores and on the internet; they are an easy way to keep your infant vitamin D sufficient. I understand that similar dropper products are available in England’s health food stores. By the way, Dr. Carol Wagner and Bruce Hollis have just presented their data about pregnant women and vitamin D.
Boyles S. High Doses of Vitamin D May Cut Pregnancy Risks: Study Shows 4,000 IU a Day of Vitamin D May Reduce Preterm Birth and Other Risks. WebMd, May 4, 2010. Their study had two treatment arms; pregnant women took either 2,000 IU/day and 4,000 IU/day. In Belgium, Dr. Hollis reported their findings forced them to discontinue the 2,000 IU/day treatment arm for ethical reasons: it was associated with more obstetrical complications than the 4,000 IU/day treatment arm.
John Cannell
Dear Dr. Cannell:
Is there anything out there about vitamin D and libido? I am asking because I have noticed an increase in my libido (I am a 48-year-old male who has been getting 5,000 IU/day shipped to me in France from Bio Tech Pharmacal for about a year.)
Philippe, France
Dear Philippe:
I know of no studies measuring male libido and vitamin D but Dr. Wehr and colleagues, at the Medical University of Graz in Austria, just published a surprising study showing that testosterone levels are directly associated with vitamin D levels (measured with the DiaSorin technique) and testosterone levels vary with the seasons, in concert with vitamin D levels. Furthermore, the men with very low testosterone levels had very low vitamin D levels. This study does not prove, like any association study, that vitamin D increases testosterone levels. It may be that sun-exposure in the summer is responsible for both higher vitamin D levels and higher testosterone levels.
By the way, the New York Daily News got it wrong, nothing in the Wehr study talks about vitamin D increasing male libido.
John Cannell
Dear Dr. Cannell:
I work with the Somali immigrant community in Ottawa. If you see how healthy these immigrants are when they come here and how terrible their health is after a few years it is hard to see how it could be anything but vitamin D. Why do the health officials in Canada do nothing?
Gail, Ottawa
Dear Gail:
What is going on in Ottawa is a crime against people of color, just as what is going on against African Americans in the USA is a crime. It is not just autism, but schizophrenia, depression, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and hypertension, are all diseases associated with vitamin D deficiency and also associated with dark skin in temperate latitudes.
African Americans die almost eight years younger than Whites do, due to the diseases of vitamin D deficiency. I hoped the Obama administration might do something, but so far nothing. Perhaps we should file our civil rights complaint again, like the one we filed in 2005, which then Attorney General Alberto Gonzales summarily dismissed:
Dear Eric:
Isotretinoin or 13-cis-Retinoic Acid (Accutane in the USA) is a retinoid used in severe acne and rosacea as well as in cancer chemotherapy. It may have the same effects on the vitamin D receptor as other retinols. It certainly interferes with vitamin D metabolism.
For those taking Isotretinoin for cancer, continue doing what your oncologist says to do, but also get your 25(OH)D to at least 100 ng/ml. If you are taking Isotretinoin for acne, my advice is to stop the Isotretinoin and take adequate doses of vitamin D.
In 1938, Dr. Merlin Maynard showed vitamin D helped acne more than one of the most effective treatments of all time, x-ray treatment. You can download his entire paper for free.
Dr. Maynard wrote beautifully:
There is probably no skin disease of greater importance to the human race than acne. It is undoubtedly our commonest skin disease, and it is rare that any individual reaches maturity without having had it in one of its phases. It is a disease of considerable economic importance, as the disfiguring scars of a severe case are never completely obliterated. It is also a disease of youth. It attains its most noxious form at the time the individual first has to earn his own living. It is undoubtedly responsible for many failures in getting business positions. It is also the basis for inferiority complexes and discouragement in young people.
Dr. Maynard published a long case series. In his earlier days, he used x-ray treatment for acne, but when he started using viosterol (vitamin D2) he stopped using x-ray treatment. In reviewing his cases, he found x-ray treatment led to favorable results 48% of the time but vitamin D did so 76% of the time; he used between 5,000 and 14,000 IU per day. Vitamin D3 may work even better than D2, if acne patients take adequate doses, like 10,000 IU/day with frequent 25(OH)D levels.
In summary, he said:
I believe I may say that at no time in my dermatological experience have I felt such complete satisfaction with a treatment as I have with the cases of this series. I know that vitamin D is an imperfect weapon to slay this disfiguring disease, but it undoubtedly gives one a feeling of being well defended. From the patients' viewpoint, it has left little to be desired, as they find themselves improving, both in appearance and in general well-being. Many have expressed the sentiment, ‘Never felt better.’
In 2008, the mechanism of action of vitamin D in the skin was the subject of a lengthy review:
Theoretically, rosacea should not respond to vitamin D, just the opposite, but readers have told me it does. However, if you have been on Isotretinoin, it may take months or years for the excessive vitamin A to get out of your system. The excess vitamin A may continue to compete for the vitamin D’s receptors attention and, until the vitamin A is gone, one may not see the full effects of vitamin D. By the way, just ask any acne patient if their acne gets better after a week of sunning at the beach.
John Cannell
Dear Dr. Cannell:
I am a naturopath in Montréal, Canada. I work primarily in mental health. I did a search on MDConsult recently for "Differential diagnosis of psychosis." One of the differential diagnoses in the list was vitamin D deficiency. I am unable to find any research that supports that, and that list had no citations. Do you know anything about it?
I have a patient who recently experienced some of the most extreme psychosis of his life. During that time, I measured his Vitamin D. It was too low to be detected! I started him on 5,000 IU per day and had measured it a few months later, when he was doing much better, and it was 22 ng/ml. I thought there was a relationship between the deficiency and the psychosis, but could not find anything on PubMed or anywhere else about the connection.
Any thoughts on that?
Melissa, Canada
Dear Melissa:
This is good news; however, I am not aware of any papers on the treatment of psychosis with vitamin D. At my hospital, which now has a policy to test all new patients for vitamin D deficiency, several of us have noticed that a few psychotic patients seem to get remarkably better on vitamin D, and others can reduce the dose of their meds, once their vitamin D deficiency is treated. However, the vast majority of patients must stay on meds or they relapse. However, no one, to my knowledge, has treated psychotic patients with pharmaceutical doses, like 20,000 IU per day. It would not surprise me at all if researchers found that dose to be effective treatment in some cases of psychosis.
The scientific community has never researched the issue of using vitamin D as a drug, that is, as a pharmaceutical. If one was free to use pharmaceutical doses, as psychiatrists in private practice are free to do, they could rapidly lend some light to the subject by treating psychotic patients with both antipsychotic meds and with 20,000 IU per day and carefully follow 25(OH)D, calcium, and clinical course. I suspect they would find a vitamin D treatment effect. If they did such a case series, I would publish their reports in this newsletter, be they negative or positive.
John Cannell
Dear Seth:
Yes, divide nmol/L by 2.5 to get ng/ml. In the USA, all labs report 25(OH)D levels as ng/ml so no division is needed. As far as our website goes, the conversion is now on it, thank you. The English company Minervation is well into a two-year project of greatly improving our website. Dr. William Grant, a member of our Board, is working closely with Minervation to get the science right. The current website began in 2003 when I spent several months writing it and my son then published it on the internet, so it is far from perfect.

HFCS Making Us Fat and Sick

Tags: Sugar Consumption Increased 50% Since Reagan Made Corn Cheap, Fructose, Prepared Foods, Fat, Sick, high BP, Uric Acid,

USA Sugar 10.6% of All Calories 1977-1978 and 1999-2006 15.8% (21.4 Teaspoons, 359 calories) Reagan's Fault?

This journal article was probably submitted before the Princeton study showing that equal calories of HFCS High Fructose Corn Syrup which is 55% Fructose and 45% glucose and cane sugar 50:50 fructose and glucose. Why did this apparently small change make such a difference in our health?

Reagan wanted to greatly increase the profits of large corporations involved in food production so the farmers got subsidies greater than the cost of producing, but so much corn was produced to keep prices low so the farmers had to produce lots of corn to get enough to feed their families! So the large corporations were able to sell corn worldwide and put local farmers out of business.

Cane sugar could not be added to fiberless foods in high amounts because it tended to crystallize out on freezing or standing. Liquid High Fructose Corn Syrup which is sweeter than glucose and sucrose, could be added in any amount to prepared foods without crystallizing. So they did not have to worry about making the taste good from tasteless corn and soybean, but just added HFCS.

Fructose does not convert to glucose in our blood and has to be processed by our liver. There part of it is converted to glucose which is stored as glycogen to be used as needed for energy, but 30 percent are converted to low density lipoproteins or the bad heavy LDL-2 which leads to plaques in our arteries.

Fructose also increases our triglycerides which leads to heart disease. If this was not enough, it also produces uric acid which acidifies our blood and gives us gout and high blood pressure independent of salt. Note salt does increase our blood pressure when used in excess, but salt also works by another mechanism to thicken our heart which leads to congestive heart disease.

We are the only ones that can change this. Complain to our political leaders, to newspapers, and to the food producers themselves. Already Coke and Pepsi have removed their colas from the school vending machines which Oregon did first and greatly improved the health of the students at a young impressionable age. Jaime a chef on ABC on Friday at 9:00 PM is trying to change the food habits of Americans starting with the most obese town in the USA, Huntington, West Virginia. Almost everyone has family members who died from diseases due to obesity.

With our government health department calling french fries vegetables, you can imagine how difficult it is. I will check him out on Friday and record Bill Moyers whose programs have been outstanding on PBS.

ScienceDaily (Apr. 22, 2010)Consuming a higher amount of added sugars in processed or prepared foods is associated with lower levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C, the "good cholesterol") and higher levels of triglycerides, which are important risk factors for cardiovascular disease, according to a study in the April 21 issue of JAMA.

Jean A. Welsh, M.P.H., R.N., of Emory University, Atlanta, and colleagues assessed the association between consumption of added sugars and blood lipid levels in U.S. adults. The study included 6,113 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2006. Respondents were grouped by intake of added sugars using limits specified in dietary recommendations (less than 5 percent of total calories [reference group], 5 percent to less than 10 percent, 10 percent to less than 17.5 percent, 17.5 percent to less than 25 percent, and 25 percent or more of total calories).

"In the United States, total consumption of sugar has increased substantially in recent decades, largely owing to an increased intake of 'added sugars,' defined as caloric sweeteners used by the food industry and consumers as ingredients in processed or prepared foods to increase the desirability of these foods," the authors write. No known studies have examined the association between the consumption of added sugars and lipid measures, such as HDL-C, triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C).

Various measures calculated in the study included average HDL-C, average triglycerides, and average LDL-C levels and adjusted odds ratios of dyslipidemia (abnormal amounts of lipids and lipoproteins in the blood), including low HDL-C levels (less than 40 mg/dL for men; less than 50 mg/dL for women), high triglyceride levels (150 mg/dL or greater), high LDL-C levels (130 mg/dL or greater), or high ratio of triglycerides to HDL-C (greater than 3.8). Results were weighted to be representative of the U.S. population. ... http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/04/100420161748.htm

Resistance of Average Doctors to Apply Harmless Vitamin D Treatments to Fix Immune System

Tags: South Beach Diet, HFCS, Obesity, Fruit juice, High BP, Uric Acid, Vitamin D Cures Pneumonia

My friends who live in Miami and love South Beach and loved the South Beach Diet which seems to work well. When I was talking to my investment advisor today, she said that she used the South Beach Diet and she mentioned that one thing the authors said about High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). She said that the book's author said that when they use to eat foods and drinks with HFGS they were hungry all the time! Fruit juice probably has more Fructose than Coke and Pepsi which is pushed as a healthful drink by some doctors! It takes a number of blemished oranges or apples to make one small glass of orange or apple juice.

Metabolism of Fructose in the liver produces glucose going to stored glycogen and the harmful LDLP, uric acid, and triglycerides. In addition Fructose somehow stops our ability to produce Leptin which prevents over-eating and the hormone Ghrelin produced by the Omentum or belly organ which grows in size as we eat too much.

My Doctor Lisa Emond, decided to give me a uric acid test, an insulin test, and the comprehensive one to determine such things as fasting glucose, pH of the blood, and other health parameters. Uric acid was tested routinely in the past, but stopped based on conclusions which has been to shown wrong by Richard Johnson in "The Sugar Fix: The High-Fructose Fallout that is Making You Fat and Sick" and a Journal of the American Medical Association or JAMA in 2008.

We must remember that even Nobel Prize winners can be wrong based on the assumptions they made by selecting data available at that time that supported their theories. We paid that price during the recent Financial Meltdown that led the World to the Great Depression. No one has a lock on the absolute truth. We are all flawed and the more we realize that, the closer we would come to making the right decisions most of the time by being open to opposing rational views.

Below is a letter by a woman to Dr. Cannell who runs the www.vitamindcouncil.org which reports on recent academic work by leading scientists on the wonders of vitamin D. When she was told by a team of doctors that her mother will die within 5 days, she forced them to give her a test of vitamin D and they agreed on 5,000 IU. Without the knowledge of the doctors she gave her mother 30,000 IU of vitamin D daily and she remarkably got a lot better!

Dr. Cannell told the daughter that we are working in an unknown area, but he is recommending boosting the dose every day to 50,000 IU and a few other vitamins including vitamin K2 until she gets over the lung infection.

Vitamin D Council

4/13/2010

Dear Dr. Cannell:

My 71 year old mother is in the hospital diagnosed with Pseudomonas pneumonia. Because she also has COPD along with years of prednisone use, her doctors have given her only a 5% chance of survival. The hospital is against patients taking any supplements without doctors orders (they kind of have a don't ask/don't tell policy on supplements), but they have prescribed her Vitamin C and zinc. But they failed to prescribe any Vitamin D.

Under my insistence, six months ago my mother had her vitamin D levels tested and found out she was critically low. So she has been taking 5,000 IU a day since then. But after finding out she had Pseudomonas, unknown to her doctors, I have been giving my mother 30,000 IU of vitamin D for the last 5 days (based on the studies I saw about Pneumonia and Vitamin D). The first few days she had a fever of 99+, but these last 2 days her temperature has returned to NORMAL. Needless to say, her doctors are astounded. They fully expected her to be near death now. But out of fear I am not planning on informing them of her Vitamin D intake unless/until after she fully recovers.

At any rate, I do not want you personal medical advice. But because you have studied Vitamin D so thoroughly, I wanted to ask you,
based on the studies and research out there, is 30,000 IU enough for this? Does research show if it is safe or beneficial to take more for this condition? Is there any other cofactors that research shows would be beneficial as well? Really, what has the research shown?

Thank you for any information you can provide. It will be simply wonderful if Vitamin D actually ends up saving my Mother's life.

Much kind regards and thank you for all you do.

Linda Thomas, New York

Dear Linda:

Increase her dose to 50,000 IU per day and continue that dose until she is fully recovered and then reduce it to 5,000 IU per day. Doses of 50,000 IU per day should only be used by critically ill people; they are safe to take for many weeks. This is to be used in addition to her antibiotics, not instead of them.

There is no direct or even much indirect science to support my advice. However, I cannot fail to give my best advice and let your mother die. As far as co-factors, vitamin D needs many but magnesium, zinc, boron, and vitamin K2 are the ones most people are deficient in.

Good reason exists to think that the antimicrobial peptides that vitamin D upregulates (increases) will be effective in a wide variety of infectious disease that peaks in the wintertime, such as pneumonia and meningitis.

I hope your letter may have the effect of reaching others who may be in similar situations.
